DIY: Bib necklace

Ever since I saw this bib necklace at Anthropologie for $138 I thought, “This can easily be made into something almost completely the same for much less.”
Well, as you can see, there is a difference in quality. I did only spend $10 on my supplies. I will take you through how I made it, and maybe you, my dear readers, can offer some advice and suggestions to improve my poor attempt at making jewelry.

My materials were trimmings that I picked out at Jo Ann Fabric. I thought I could cut the flowers in this lace trim so that each individual flower could stand out as a piece on the neckalce.

I positioned my different flowers over a pieces of felt and pinned them. I then began to sloppily sew the pieces to the felt, which would serve as the backing.

I then cut away the excess felt and sewed two pink strands of ribbon to the ends to tie the necklace.

And voila! I have something that maybe, slightly resembles the original. Granted, I think I can add some gems, beads, or pearls to spruce this up a bit. And I could add different flower pieces as well. Any other suggestions? What do you think of my first attempt?
