Fourth of July Flag Luminary

The American flag as home decor has always appealed to me. There’s something so traditional about the stripes and stars, yet timeless. The colors pair just as well with deep wood tones as they do with bright whites. And the Fourth of July holiday has always held a special place in my heart since I was a young girl walking to see the fireworks display with my family and staying up late to play with sparklers in the backyard. Although I’ve moved away from home, the rituals remain the same. To quickly add some festive flair to the apartment this year, I made these American Flag luminaries, which double nicely as flower vases.

All you need are a few mason jars (old pasta jars work nicely too), those cheap little American flags that they sell at Michael’s for about a $1, and Modge Podge. First I separated the flags from their poles. Then I spread a little Modge Podge on a jar and pressed a flag firmly on that spot. Next I added a second layer of Modge Podge over the flag to help secure it. Then I let them dry. Finally, place a tea light in the jar or some pretty hydrangeas and you’re all set.
