How to Create a Holiday Party Look You Can Actually Wear Later

Every year around the holidays, we inevitably have one fancy party that requires us to get all dressed up. It’s a great time to break out of the normal routine and embrace a little holiday cheer. And every year, it’s hard to stand out in the sea of plaid. Plaid is great and I own a few pieces that I love to wear around the holidays, but once you’ve worn a plaid item once, it loses its novelty. That’s why I like to have a few neutral pieces that help me get through the holiday party season and beyond. Here’s how I pulled together a timeless, classic look that still feels festive and how you can do the same.

Details: J.Crew Lace Pants / J.Crew Turtleneck / Similar Red Pumps / Similar J.Crew Factory Necklace

When I found these black lace pants, I knew they would be the perfect holiday party alternate. The lace detail makes them feel fancy and festive. I especially love the trim around the cuff. The black pair feels sophisticated. I can dress these up for date night or dress them down for a day at the office. They’d look just as darling with a sequin tank top as they would with a chambray shirt and statement necklace. And depending on the season, you can add little pops of color like these red pumps to make them fit whatever theme you’re going for.

Here are some tips for creating your own classic holiday look:

  1. Choose a Classic Color Palette

If you’re trying to make holiday dressing a little easier this year, you probably don’t have to look any further than your own closet. You probably have the start of a great holiday outfit in your closet already. Choose items from your wardrobe with a simple color palette like all ivory, tan, or black, and add on to that to make it a holiday-ready look.

  1. Add texture

Wearing all black may make it look like you’re going to a funeral, which is especially bad for a holiday party. Even an all ivory look may look flat. But adding an interesting material or texture can both elevate and break up a monotone look. Tulle, velvet, or sequins are great options.

  1. Add red or green accessories

Temper a monotone look with little pops of red or green. A red pair of shoes or a green clutch would be perfect.

  1. Add some bling

Add one statement piece of jewelry to make your look feel dressy. Either a really gorgeous pair of earrings or a big statement necklace, not both. You don’t want too many things competing for attention.

I would pair this Banana Republic Factory skirt with either a black turtleneck or ivory sweater and these sequin pumps.

I’d wear this J.Crew black velvet jumpsuit with these dangly earrings and red pumps.

I’d style this Loft Velvet Belted Dress with a red or green clutch.
