10 Questions to Ask Before Buying New Clothes

10-questions-to-ask-before-buying-new-clothes-wordpress

In the beginning of the year, I committed to becoming a more mindful consumer. Part of that means appreciating what you have and consuming less, but eventually the need or desire to buy something new will arise. This is especially true of my capsule wardrobe. A few weeks ago, I purged my winter wardrobe and narrowed down my closet to just the essentials. Although I feel like I have everything I need at this moment, this may change as my style evolves and my needs change. Responding to these changes with the right mindset will help make sure any new purchases I make are worthwhile. Here are 10 questions I’ll be asking myself before adding anything new to my capsule wardrobe.

Of Note – January 25

loving-this-week-wordpress

Happy Saturday! How was your week? For me this week was a return to routines. Have I said how much I love a good routine? I went to the gym four times — the first time since before the holidays. I meal prepped and made delicious, healthy meals, one of which I talk about below. And we got back into some shows and found new shows to enjoy. Oh and we’re planning like crazy for the big day! It’s ok though — we’ve got this! Here are some recipes, TV shows, movies, and podcasts of note from this week. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

The Black Cashmere Sweater: A Winter Wardrobe Staple

cashmere-black-sweater-1-W

If you are just starting out on your capsule wardrobe journey or just trying to create a more timeless, classic wardrobe, one of the best items you can add is a black cashmere sweater. You can rarely go wrong wearing black, especially in a luxe fabric like cashmere. (It even has a Seinfeld episode dedicated to it.) And, as the temperatures continue to drop in February, it’s a warm and cozy option for the office and play. Here I show how I wear my black cashmere sweater to dress up an office, casual, and going out look.

Winter 2020 Capsule Wardrobe

winter-2020-capsule-wardrobe-wordpress

Now that the dust has settled from the holidays, I finally found time to put together my winter capsule wardrobe. It may seem a little late, but we’ve been experiencing fall-like weather throughout December and early January here in Pittsburgh, so now feels like the right time. Before I jump into what I’m wearing this winter, here is a little background:

As I think about the new year and the next decade, one of the thoughts that weighs heaviest on my mind is the collective impact we have on our planet. It’s driving me to want to become a more mindful consumer. As someone who blogs about personal style and shares their clothing purchases publicly, I can’t in good conscience encourage people to consume more than is absolutely necessary. That’s why I’m trying to set a good example by taking deliberate steps to become more sustainable in my fashion choices. Here are 4 strategies I’m employing to make fewer, but more thoughtful purchases while still maintaining a functional wardrobe that reflects my personal style.

How to Create a Holiday Party Look You Can Actually Wear Later

classic-holiday-party-look-1

Every year around the holidays, we inevitably have one fancy party that requires us to get all dressed up. It’s a great time to break out of the normal routine and embrace a little holiday cheer. And every year, it’s hard to stand out in the sea of plaid. Plaid is great and I own a few pieces that I love to wear around the holidays, but once you’ve worn a plaid item once, it loses its novelty. That’s why I like to have a few neutral pieces that help me get through the holiday party season and beyond. Here’s how I pulled together a timeless, classic look that still feels festive and how you can do the same.

I Made Nutella Crepes and So Can You

When we visited Paris last fall, we stopped at the Luxemborg Gardens or the Jardin du Luxembourg, an attraction know for it’s cascading flower pots, serene pond, and tree-lined pathways. While we were there, I was feeling a little peckish (let’s just be honest, hangry), so we stopped at the crepe stand inside the gardens. I ordered the Nutella crepes, and to do this day, I remember it being one of the most life-affirming snacks of my life. Paris was already beautiful, but the gargoyles at Notre Dame really had a sparkle in their eye after that. I instantly felt energized and warmed by the gooey chocolate center enveloped by fluffy pancake. Ever since our trip, I’ve been dreaming about recreating it. Here’s the crepes recipe I followed. To my surprise, they turned out great!

Travel Diary: 2 Days in Portland

portland-travel-diary-1

As I mentioned in my San Francisco Travel Diary, we spent one day in San Francisco and two days in Portland when we were on the West Coast back in October. Both cities were a lot of fun and each had its own vibe. But Portland? It’s definitely unique. The slogan “Keep Portland Weird”, which can be seen plastered on the side of buildings and bumper stickers, seems very appropriate. I can kind of see where some of the inspiration behind Portlandia came from. When I say that, I mean it in the best way possible. Portland is home to many local bars, restaurants, and shops, each one with its own personality. There were not many chains, which made sampling the local fair even more fun and interesting. Here’s where we stayed, ate, drank, visited, and shopped.

I’m officially home for Thanksgiving! Yay! I drove in Thursday and have been working from home this whole week. When I can’t take paid time off around the holidays working from home is the next best thing. It means I get a bonus weekend in Cleveland! Over the weekend, I made sure to squeeze in as much fun as possible. I went shopping with my mom and sister, had dinner with our friends and their two kids (where we played a rowdy game of pie face), and spent a lot of time snuggling my niece.
