3 Tips for Wearing Gold Sequin Leggings

Details: H&M sweater (old) / Parisiscoming.com leggings (Order one size larger) / Calvin Klein shoes via Marshalls / Coach purseĀ

I rang in the New Year like any style blogger, human being and woman of 2015 should: in gold sequin leggings. I know New Year’s Eve is old news, but that line just sounded good. And it’s true! We attended the Girl Talk concert here in Pittsburgh on an unusually frigid New Year’s Eve night and I have to say these leggings stole the show. Many concert goers told me so … or something to that affect.

When I first received these pants for my birthday in July, my feelings were of both elation and panic. Elation because there was nothing my heart desired more than a pair of gold sequin leggings. Major props to the boyfriend for finding these pants via the Google machine. Panic because I thought I lacked the guts to pull of this aberration of fashion. I quickly realized that was crazy talk! My advice to you for feeling more comfortable wearing gold sequin leggings is as follows.

  1. Wear Them Comfortably – I don’t judge anyone who wears leggings as pants, but that is one thing I am not comfortable with. And I am certainly not going to feel comfortable wearing leggings as pants if they have gold sequins on them. So I made sure to layer a longer sweater over them. Wear them with whatever makes you feel comfortable.
  2. Choose a Good Color Scheme – Choosing the right color scheme will help make the whole outfit look under control. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, “Don’t let the outfit wear you.” It would be very easy for that to happen with gold sequin leggings. I imagine these leggings would look good with emerald and black, cream and black, cream and pink, and pink and black. I am sure there are other combinations, but I think the key is keeping the scheme relatively simple.

  3. Mix in Casual Elements – One of the things I love about this look is that it mixes the dressy gold sequin, the sporty cut of the leggings and the casual sweater to make an understated look. It also lets the leggings be the center of attention instead of having elements that are competing for attention. This type of look is created all the time by Jenna Lyons who just masters casual cool.

Good luck in your gold sequin legging adventures!

Consigment Shopping Before New Year’s Eve

I found myself this New Year’s Eve with no clear choice in my closet as far as outfits are concerned. I have a couple lovely new pieces of jewelry, but that’s just part of it. Not to mention bills, upcoming trips and birthdays have me trying to save my money. So I decided to check out Avalon to see what was available in the affordable and slightly used department. There were a lot of great pieces, but no winner for New Year’s Eve. I will probably wear something I already own, but I wanted to show you some of the cool dresses and not so cool dresses I looked at for inspiration.

This metallic silver dress was great, but a couple sizes to big. I wanted to try it on just to make sure. If there was more time a trip to the tailor would have take care of that.

Too small.

I loved the idea of this dress, however the hearts are just not my style. I loved the sheer overlay and the intricate beading.

Great J.Crew jacket, but too big and boxy.

This dress fell under the category of “I don’t know how I am supposed to wear it”. The torso was way too long.

This turned out to be a little too long and unflattering in my opinion.

Although this is a great jacket that could easily be dressed up or down, I thought the pattern and boxy shape were a little overwhelming on me.

Finally I struck gold with this practically brand new, silk J.Crew blouse. It may not make an appearance for New Year’s Eve, but it will be put to good use for the rest of 2012. What are you wearing for NYE?

New Year’s Eve 2011

A friend emailed me the other day asking for some advice. She has her New Year’s Eve outfit all picked out (See above), but she was wondering what to wear as a cover up for church before the festivities. I suggested either wrapping up with a pashmina, throwing on a blazer, or just wearing a cute cardigan. What would you wear? Here are three cardigans I think would go nicely with the outfit:

Express, $34.93

Forever 21, $19.80

Kohl’s, $29.99
